Brittany Cartie

Brittany Cartie is a Syracuse-based visual artist and printmaker whose predominantly figurative works explore themes of identity, autonomy, grief, and memory. Cartie received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art: Drawing/Printmaking from Binghamton University (2016), and has over 10 years of experience in arts education and community programming.

Cartie’s studio practice combines traditional methods of drawing and printmaking with unexpected materials and surfaces, often repurposing second-hand books as a canvas for her figure drawings. While this body of work has primarily been commissioned by private collectors across the United States, Cartie’s first drawing on books, “A Place Of My Own” (2018), is on permanent display at 205 Dry in Binghamton, NY.

Inspired by her late grandmother’s collection of heirlooms and stories, Cartie’s work is also deeply concerned with the documentation and preservation of memories. Repetitive printmaking methods contrast with more vulnerable mono-prints, facilitating a conversation about the ephemerality of time, material objects, and the physical world. Her work highlights the lifelong cycle of resisting and surrendering to grief.
